Car Wash

Alex Schweder La

2001
8" x 18" x 28"
Vitreous china and silicone rubber

An example of one of Schweder La's earliest and most emblematic works, Car Wash explores the resemblance between building as model as body. The model evokes a culture of bodily hygiene through the use of white porcelain oozes, drips, secretes, consumes liquids -- despite itself. Like many building it acts "as an effigy to human bodies," as the artist writes. Plans and sections were drawn with an x-ray machine are a precursor to Schweder La's Friable Aperture Series, and his most recent inflatables, which glow in the dark and retain an trace of the body's imprint.
